[ That also reminds him of the puppet frenzy. He had thought Otoha was human, though now he second guesses that. Can humans do that, lose it and start attacking each other? ]
You can't feel pain?
[ He considers. ]
I don't think I feel pain, either.
[ More like he's not sure how to differentiate pain from other things. He's been able to feel a lot more for awhile. But he also gets hit really hard so who knows? He's not sure how to figure out sensations properly, and he's so rarely been touched gently. ]
So sometimes this place takes more than one person from the same world. I see. But no one knows why or how we get picked, from what I've learned.
[ Of course he doesn't remember, but he second-guesses himself about it. ]
Forgive me, can you remind me of your name?
I don't really know what this thing is, but it did generate one for me. I don't think it was very kind with some of what it said but that doesn't bother me.
"Wormy feet, huh?" he asks, looking back down at the shell. He has it sitting in his right hand — not his metal one (though technically all of him is made of metal). He can feel it, in that way he can feel things at all, but he's not sure if it has little feet or not.
"Like a caterpillar in a shell," he muses aloud, though it isn't anything like that. He's just trying to draw a comparison. Anything else he thinks of is probably the stuff of nightmares.
As if affronted by that comparison, the creature jets off his hand again, glowing faintly.
"I've never seen anything like this place," he says. "Not just these creatures, but…any of it."
He puts his hand back at his side and gives Levi his undistracted attention for the time being.
"You aren't from here, right? Humans I've talked to aren't from this place, it seems like."
It's popular in Krat, too. But...I am a puppet who is alive. That's close enough, I think.
[ He literally named himself after the book character, but that's too much truth to reveal under these circumstances. At least it doesn't seem to matter to Flat if he's the same as a character in a book. Only a few people have been happy to meet him, and he wants to hang on to that. ]
Humans growing to the size of a building...that does sound strange.
[ He's not sure if that's possible, but he has seen humans become monsters. Is that the same thing? He's not sure, and it's hard to tell. ]
I think you're right. It's fun to learn about other people and where they came from.
This is way better than buying windows! [ he nods in agreement. ] Though I was never gonna buy one in the first place— where would I even put one if I already have a good window?
[ giving pinocchio a warm grin, he continues walking as he decides to comment on something the other had said. ]
But you know, I think that you're more than close enough! Sure, you might not have organs and made of metal, but I actually met someone that was seventy percent metal. That's over half! Some people would say that he's more machine than person.
[ it only makes sense, right? to give up so much of your body in order to have it turned into a weapon, one would surely have to give up their own humanity. and yet... ]
But he was still very human, you know? Because human doesn't have anything to do whether you have organs or flowing blood. It's all [ he taps his temple ] here and— [ he taps his chest, right over the heart. ] —here! I'm sure of it!
[ Pinocchio can't be bothered trying to have emotions for a dead ruler he's never met, either. A funeral is a new experience, especially a royal one, but it's just one more dead person. ]
I'm not really built for peace.
[ He means that literally, but he means it in the philosophical sense, too. What would he do if he didn't have any type of battle to worry about? ]
Have you seen the woods? I've never known monsters to keep to themselves for long. Maybe there's something keeping them at bay.
A soldier or a warrior, I take it? I could understand the feeling.
[That’s where he’s found his strength too, although he wouldn’t mind hanging his sword for good once all is over.]
Indeed, I have. Sometimes they dare to pray on the small animals at the outskirts but they never delve further out. Perhaps there is something like a magic barrier keeping them at bay?
[ Pinocchio does follow, falling into step just beside More. ]
Surely a cow won't say no to hay.
[ That seems logical, right? ]
I can carry it for us.
[ He hesitates for a moment, unsure of how much they need. Cows are big. Do they need to eat a lot? There's more than one cow. This isn't the kind of calculation he has any idea about.
He just grabs two bales off the pile, one under each arm. ]
He isn't in a hurry, so maybe the destination isn't too important just yet. He'd like to get back to town eventually. But he isn't human; he doesn't get tired the way humans do. He could wander around here a long time, maybe forever, without tiring. He might get bored or annoyed, but those are other problems.
He is neither of those at present. So he accepts her response, even though it isn't much of an answer. Not everyone answers questions in a straightforward way, a fact he is well aware of by now.
He pays attention to her as they walk, though he is ill-versed in learning much about people by watching them. He doesn't fundamentally understand them enough, though he likes looking. It's easier with ones that don't wear masks all the time (though some masks can't be seen, a fact he hasn't entirely grasped).
"Did anyone come here on purpose?" he counters, but he's pretty sure he knows the answer. So he shakes his head a little. "No. I was doing something that I thought was important, but somehow I woke up here."
He still thinks saving Krat is important, but his sense of time is kind of skewed thanks to Sophia's constant rewinding of it. How much time he's actually experienced is kind of hazy. He does have a sense of urgency to go back and finish what he started. But so far all he's heard is that no one knows the way home. They can't all be lying about that.
Maybe there are poems here that will catch your eye. I haven't looked at books yet. It wouldn't have occurred to me to look at poetry first, though. I like stories, so that's where I'd start.
I didn't realise you had such famous friends! That's exciting. You know, I never got the chance to ask what you do back home. Other than knowing famous singers, that is.
Pinocchio tilts his head, not entirely following the connection. What could music have to do with monsters?
But he nods all the same.
"I've played the piano," he says, "and heard some music played or sung. I wasn't as much a fan of the opera, I think."
This might be an attempt at humour if he were speaking to someone at home. The opera house had been…a whole harrowing experience. But it's also just a true statement. He can't yet divorce opera music from a messy, trying time.
Gemini has seen more of Pinocchio's truths than anyone else, just by virtue of having been with him since almost the beginning. It isn't quite the same as sharing on purpose, since it's circumstance. But he's never minded. He does consider Gemini a friend, and that's good enough.
Pinocchio relies on lying in a lot of ways, but the consequences of those lies…well, he never really feels them. There's too much going on for someone to really catch on, but part of that is just wilful. Humans think puppets can't lie. They're mostly right, but Pinocchio isn't like the others. And he hasn't lied to anyone to hurt them. Sometimes the truth hurts so much worse anyway.
There's some kind of moral lesson in all of it, maybe, but it's not one he has a frame of reference for.
"You hold all life in such high regard," Pinocchio muses. He hasn't encountered anyone else like Hermes, at home or here.
"I wish they could too. Maybe one day they'll see me as really, truly alive," he says. His greatest desire isn't to be real, or to have humans in general think of him as human, though those are close seconds to his need for Geppetto to see him as his son.
"I met another puppet recently who said that puppets are human," he offers, slowly. He has not and would not speak of Arlecchino to anyone but Gemini. "I don't know that I agree. I don't know that we need to be human, exactly. But if we were, they wouldn't see us as disposable."
That's a little naive of him. He does know humans kill each other and throw each other away, but he still imagines that by and large, he's right.
"On a related note, I don't see you as an aberration. Even if you aren't the same as others, that doesn't make you somehow wrong."
Me and Del are opening our new diner this Tuesday. We're calling it Lumturo, a lighthouse in a sea of cares! Come over for some good food, a good view, and if you're feeling brave, the stage will be open for anyone to have a crack at performing.
I'll reserve a table for you if you want to come, so tell all your mates too!
[Attached is more information and directions! It's located overlooking Stellari's airship docks.]
